Beech-Nut Organic Review + Giveaway

I have teamed up with Beech-Nut, who provided me with the products pictured below for free in exchange for an honest unbiased review. All opinions and comments are 100% my own.

As Avery was approaching the 4 month old mark, I began to research what solid foods that we should start with first. I have done things completely different with Avery than I did with Madison and Caroline. Both of my older girls were on formula and cereal by the time they were 3 months old. Up until now, Avery has been exclusively breastfed. I introduced Avery to cereal last week. I mixed it extremely thin so that she could get the hang of how to manipulate it in her mouth and swallow it. I am so excited to see her reaction to new flavors. Avery and I have partnered with Beech-Nut to explore their organic line of new tastes for her. I have always had an extremely high opinion of Beech-Nut. Their company has been producing quality baby food since 1931. They also recently earned the 2015 Product of the Year in the baby food category.

Beech-Nut sent me a case of each of the following flavors: Just Carrots; Just Apple, Raspberry and Avocado; Just Peas and Spinach; and Just Butternut Squash and Sweet Corn.

BeechNut - All Baby Food

Avery started with the Just Apples, Raspberries and Avocado. Her facial expressions were so amusing as she tried to figure out what the new flavors were. (You should always introduce one new taste at a time to make sure that your baby does have any allergic reactions.) Choosing Beech-Nut Organic is a fantastic place to start because I know that Avery is getting the very best quality of fresh foods.

Beech-Nut’s new organic line of baby foods emphasize bright colors, bold flavors and textures that are packaged in their cut honeypot glass jars. I love that there are no additives. Babies get the best quality because there are no artificial ingredients or preservatives. Their hues are so vibrant! The color and aromas are true to the fruits and vegetables that they come from. It is real food for babies, just like mom makes at home. This line of organic baby food is the closest thing that you can get to homemade. Beech-Nut uses the same gentle cooking process as the rest of their product line, without adding excess water or cooking the nutrients away. Beech-Nut wants all parents to know exactly what their babies are eating, so they are now the only baby food company that shares their recipes with their customers on their website.

Children’s Book Review + Giveaway (Princess Gabby Girl)

Princess Gabby Girl and the Sparkly Dress written by Camille Battaglia and illustrated by Karen Wolcott.

Book cover in Caroline's lap

I recently had the privilege of meeting Camille Battaglia on social media. I noticed that Camille was an author of children’s books. My children LOVE to read! When I say LOVE, I mean that they devour books as if they were candy! My oldest daughter, Madison, will read through a chapter book in one afternoon. And my 7 year old, Caroline, will sit in the floor for hours reading books and looking at their pictures. Because of this, they have such vivid imaginations. I am a firm believer in reading. I am overjoyed that my kids are avid readers like me! Be that as it may, Camille graciously agreed to send me a copy of her book Princess Gabby Girl and the Sparkly Dress, as well as an autographed copy for one of my readers.

Caroline reading book Caroline reading 2

Princess Gabby Girl and the Sparkly Dress is beautifully written! I love the encouraging message that it sends to my children. The story begins with Princess Gabby Girl twirling about in her dress in her castle. My daughters can relate because they love to wear dresses. It makes them feel elegant to twirl around and ruffle their skirts. Princess Gabby finds a “gorgeous, glowing mirrored wardrobe” with “the most extraordinary dress!” After she puts the dress on, the mirror trembles and a voice comes from it. The voice is that of Miss Marvelous. She tells Gabby that she must do two things to keep the dress shining brightly: She must always use kind words and she must always do good deeds.

Book - Wardrobe.dress

Gabby goes around the castle and is kind to everyone and does good things for people, all the while her dress is radiantly glowing.

Book - bad behavior Book - Bad behavior 2

The next day, Gabby wakes up cranky and becomes moody and short with others. Gabby could not change her grouchy mood. She began to notice that her dress was losing its shimmer. It begins to turn dingy and dirty. Gabby makes several attempts to spruce up her dress again, but nothing works. As Gabby takes the dress back to the wardrobe, she is confronted again by Miss Marvelous. Gabby is reminded that you must always be kind and do good deeds or you will lose your shine. Gabby reflects on her actions and her shimmer is restored. This book “encourages readers to find their own happiness in helping others and sparkling in their own world.”

Book Illustrations Book Illustration 2

Aside from the great message that this book instills in children, the illustrations are great. As I was reading the book to Caroline, she kept asking me to turn the page back so that she could look at the picture again. I like that the pictures have so much detail that my daughter wanted to look and study the pages. I believe that the drawings, as well as the story, help develop the thought processes of our children. I believe that a good story paired with intriguing pictures help to refine the love of reading.

Camille Battaglia is a fashion stylist with a B.A. in Psychology from GMU. She lives with her 3 children in their home town of Great Falls, Virginia, where she always keeps an eye out for fashion and valuable life lessons. Camille’s love of her children and passion for fashion gave birth to this story.

Karen Wolcott loves illustrating sparkly dresses and bringing an author’s vision to life. She has illustrated many children’s book including the Flower Girl World series, Barbie Golden Books and Sylvia, The Littlest Guardian Angel. She lives in Omaha, Nebraska, with her two children.

Philips Avent Natural Bottle Review and Giveaway

After having my third daughter, I can say that I have used an assortment of bottles. When I found out that I was pregnant with my third daughter, Avery, I decided that I would try the Philips Avent Naturals bottles. I knew that I wanted to give breastfeeding a shot, but I wasn’t sure how long I would be able to nurse, especially since I was returning to work after 6 weeks. Because of this, I knew that I would have to transition to bottles at some point. I wanted a bottle that resembles the breast as much as possible to reduce nipple confusion. The Philips AVENT Natural bottles come in two sizes – 4 oz (125ml) and 9 0z (260 ml). They are made of 100% BPA free plastic and the new design has an ergonomic grip and twin vent (to minimize the occurrence of colic). My first child had severe reflux and colic, so I paid particular attention to this feature. There is also a glass version for those who prefer it. I personally feel that glass bottles are heavy and are not very easy to handle.

Philips Avent Natural bottles 4 and 9 oz

I have to admit that I initially chose the Philips Avent Natural bottles because I liked the way they looked. I wasn’t sure how Avery would take them or if they would compliment breastfeeding. I like the bottles for their simple and clean design, as do the rest of the products in their line. The 9 oz bottle fits nicely in my hands, whereas the 4 oz bottle can be held by just wrapping the index finger and thumb around it. It is designed so that small hands are able to get a firmer grip. Avery is now four months old and does very well with the Philips Avent Naturals bottle. She uses these bottles at daycare during the day and nurses in the evening and night. These bottles made the transition extremely easy.

Avent Pink Handheld

What I first noticed about the new design is that the nipple and the top portion of the bottle is shaped as close to a breast as possible. The new range of bottles has been designed to allow babies to make a seamless transition from breast to bottle. Aside from the shape, the nipple has ‘petals’ around it, a familiar feature in their breast pumps. This makes the nipple “anti-colic” as it incorporates a twin-valve system, connected via these petal shapes. Further, because of its shape, the nipple doesn’t collapse when Avery uses this bottle.

Philips Avent Natural Nipple

I was excited to see that the biggest change from the Philips Avent Classic bottle was that they did away with the ‘adaptor ring’ which was added on to prevent leakage and part of the 2-piece anti-colic system. I hated having to insert the ring onto the ridge around the nipple and then make sure that it fit perfectly onto the bottle. If it wasn’t aligned just right, the bottle didn’t have a good seal. It was a huge inconvenience to have so many pieces to use, which was the main reason that I didn’t want to use the vent-air bottles. You can see the comparison between the Classic bottle and the new Philips Avent Natural nipples. One thing to note is that even though the Natural bottle is compatible with the majority of the Philips Avent range, it cannot be interchanged with the Classic bottles. So if you have existing bottles and would like to simple replace the nipple, it is not possible since the Natural bottles have a slightly larger circumference.

Philips Avent Classic v Natural use

The new bottles are taller and slightly wider at the base and at the top though it has the same capacity as the Classic bottles. The new bottles are more shapely to encourage a better grip for baby.

Another problem I had with the older bottles (besides the adaptor ring) was that there is leakage when the bottle is not twisted on properly. If you still have the Classic bottles, it is best to NOT tighten the bottle top too much. With the new bottles, I did not encounter any leakage at all, even if I didn’t pay particular attention to putting the top on just so. It took one turn, and the bottle is sealed perfectly.

I like that these bottles also come in different colors and designs. Aside from their original clear design, Avent has also produced a blue bottle with animal designs for boys, a pink bottle with floral and butterfly designs for girls, and clear bottles with purple/pink elephants for girls or blue and green elephants for boys. I personally like variety, so I have clear, clear with elephants, and the pink bottles with the designs on them. I think my favorite is the pink bottle on the far right with the blue and purple designs.
